Kareena Kapoor:Saif can't be vegetarian ever

Actor Saif Ali Khan loves non-vegetarian food and his actress-wife Kareena Kapoor says he just can't do without eating meat.

"Saif can't be vegetarian, he says he can be vegetarian only for one meal and what that means, I don't understand. He is like, 'I can't not eat meat at night'," the 32-year-old said here Saturday at the launch of dietician Rujuta Diwekar's DVD "Indian Food Wisdom."

Saif has found new love in kachoris now.

"But now Saif has found new love in kachoris and samosas and he gorged on them in Lucknow," said Kareena, who has turned vegetarian.

Kareena is currently busy promoting Prakash Jha's Satyagraha. She is also shooting for Punit Malhotra's Gori Tere Pyaar Mein with Imran Khan.

Saif and Kareena got married in October 2012.

Aamir Khan was recently heard being critical of the whole fad of confirming release dates ages before a film's completion, as Bollywood biggies regularly do. He felt a film's release should come into the picture only after the makers are satisfied with the final product. Aamir has a point there. The fact, though, is ironic that dates of both his upcoming films have been announced well in advance. The Yash Raj Films- produced Dhoom 3 co- starring Katrina Kaif was confirmed for Christmas 2013 months ago while trade sources say Rajkumar Hirani's Peekay , which also features Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput, has already been locked for a Christmas 2014 release.

Confronting Amartya Sen's view: Why WHO's methodology on malnutrition is hopelessly flawed for India

In a recent TV interview, when the anchor asked Amartya Sen how he would respond to economists Arvind Panagariya andSwaminathan Aiyar who had questioned the basis of his estimate of 1,000 deaths per week due to non-implementation of the food security Bill, he prefaced thus, "Panagariya I don't think actually believes there is muchundernourishment in the country. He thinks this is a myth - at least this is the headline of his paper."

The remark bore no direct relationship to the question posed and was perhaps intended to discredit its source, namely, me. It reminded me of my only encounter with Sen in a TV debate on the food security Bill in which he disparaged me by saying that being resident in New York I wouldn't understand the ground reality of India. Ironically, it didn't dawn on him that he had spent an even larger proportion of his life abroad!

FLAWS IN THE METHOD

Sen's latest undernourishment remark fares no better. It reveals that rather than read my paper he had inferred its content from the title, which, as he knows well, is chosen by the newspaper editors in the first place. The remark also lays bare that his collaborator Jean Dreze, who had corresponded with me about the paper immediately after its publication, never discussed with him my objections to malnutrition estimates they have uncritically reported in their book. Under normal scholarly practice, you would record such objections even if you reject them.

For readers unfamiliar with the context of Sen's remark, let me explain. I have argued in several of my recent writings, including a detailed article in the Economic and Political Weekly, that the current one-size-fits-all methodology to estimate the incidence of malnutrition is hopelessly flawed. Aggressively pushed by the World Health Organization(WHO), this methodology applies a globally common set of height and weight norms forchildren of given age and gender to determine whether a child of that age and gender is stunted (low height for age) or underweight (low weight for age).

THE CONTEXT MATTERS...

Underlying this methodology is the assumption that different populations of children of given age and gender have identical height and weight potential regardless of race, ethnicity, culture and geography. In other words, with fully nutritious diet, on average, five-year old Indian boys will attain the same height and weight as Norwegian five-year old boys. But empirical evidence contradicts this assumption. Race, ethnicity, culture and geography do matter.

Thus, for example, a study shows that after controlling for maternal socio-demographic and prenatal care factors, on average, newborn children of Japanese-American mothers are smaller and weigh less than those of American mothers. Children of Indian-American mothers show the exact same pattern. Yet, the India-American children are as healthy in terms of infant mortality rates as their white-American counterparts and healthier than black-American counterparts. In a similar vein, five-year old girls of Moroccan descent in the Netherlands remain 2.7 centimeters shorter than their Dutch counterparts.

Why the Supreme Court needs reform soon INDIA

The Supreme Court is suddenly buffeted by controversy, some of its own making. The recent unseemly spectacle of two Chief Justices talking at each other via media instead of through their in-house mechanism is symptomatic of deeper malaise. 

CJIs have insisted that the in-house mechanism works like a well-oiled machine, whether making top judicial appointments or transfers or dealing with disciplinary issues while insulating it from pressures from government. But never were its failings so glaringly highlighted as in last week's media slugfest. 

What prevented the collegium - comprising four senior-most judges of the court apart from the CJI - from telling the former CJI not to waive procedural norms and deal with matters pending in other courts? The accusation is that Altamas Kabir took up matters concerning Sahara, Sunil Mittal and Jaiprakash Associates, which were pending with other benches, and issued orders favouring the companies. 

If that is true, what prevented the collegium from speaking up against him? Or did they? Or have the CJIs tamed the collegium? These need to be answered. If the new CJI felt that these were wrong orders, he could have easily overturned them without giving the media and the public a new handle to beat the judiciary with. 

The top court should seriously think over reforming the collegium system instead of whipping itself into a state of righteous indignation every time somebody suggests change. 

There has always been a disproportionate representation of kith and kin of lawyers and judges in its appointments. Appointments when the executive had a say, were infinitely better than when the judiciary usurped the process. 

The collegium system has failed to address disciplinary issues such as judges failing to turn up on time, not giving judgements for years and alleged corruption. 

Where's the sensitivity or the urgency towards solving people's problems? Cases seem to go on forever, while criminals walk free. There's no respect for the law, might is right again and a restive populace is showing signs of going the lynch-mob way, while the CJIs fight it out under the glare of 24x7 cameras. 

A preoccupation with cleaning up the government's Augean stables, instead of its own, has compounded the court's problems. The court often blunders into areas which are the domain of government or subject experts, earning much criticism. 

Kabir's controversial last-day ruling, which shot down the Medical Council of India's proposal to have a centralised medical entrance test, is a case in point. Kabir gave private institutions the legal backing needed to hold their own entrance tests.
