People living in Jagtap Dairy, Pimple Saudagar and Sangvi areas, which are in proximity to Pavana river, have a respite this monsoon. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation  (PCMC) has demolished two bunds in the river which used to block the river’s flow leading to flood situation in these areas.
Whenever Pavana river used to swell, its waters would enter these societies forcing their residents to evict. The worst situation was witnessed in 2005 when hundreds of residents from this area were forced to stay away from their homes for three days.
However, ever after incessant rains in the catchment areas of Pavana dam and water discharge of water, these societies have remained safe this year. Civic officials attribute this to the recent razing of two old bunds in Pavana river.
The razing of the bunds at Jagtap Dairy and Sangvi has not only curbed threat of floods to these societies, but it has also reduced mosquitoes in Jagtap Dairy, Pimple Saudagar and Sangvi areas.
PCMC’s engineering department spokesperson Shirish Poredi said, “Earlier the water used to get accumulated in the area and enter the housing societies along the river. But now when the bunds have been razed, the water is flowing with ease.”
The corporation’s disaster management cell chief Omprakash Bahiwal said, “We still cannot assure that there will be no water logging in the low lying areas. Only this monsoon, the chances of river water entering the societies in suburbs are less.”
The environment department of PCMC has proposed the demolition of one more bund on Pavana river located near Pudumjee mills in Thergaon. The civic staff and the state of the irrigation department officials had recently visited the seven bunds built on the Pavana river and decided to raze them. These bunds were built to irrigate the surrounding fields, but now that no fields have remained there, the civic body has decided to demolish most of these bunds.
