Sanjay Dutt, who is currently serving a sentence in Pune’s Yerwada Jail, gets a monthly ‘allowance’ of Rs 4,000 from his family. The actor, at his home, has 32-member staff (some of whom have been with him for over 30 years) and when they heard about how their employer was living on such a meagre budget, some of them broke down.

Says a source close to him, “Sanju is allowed to get a money order which is worth Rs 4,000. His wife Manaayata’s trusted aide visits the post office once a month to send the money to the jail authorities. They in turn give coupons to Sanju who uses them to buy stamps, envelopes, soaps, toothbrush and other basic necessities. Not everybody knew about this fact. One day, Manaayata was waiting for lunch to be served in their Bandra flat but the food was not served.

She waited with the children for a long time and then went to the kitchen to see what was causing the delay. She saw that the staffers were huddled and whispering while some of them were in tears. When she asked them what was wrong they told her that they were shocked to know that Sanju gets such a little amount.”

It was hard for his staff members to digest the fact that the actor was getting less to spend than even them. Sanju has been a generous boss. Last year after Agneepath’s success, Sanju gave Rs 25,000 to each member of his staff (Rs 8 lakh!).

Not just that, whenever he was in a good mood and on special days like birthdays and anniversaries, he would give Rs 4,000-5,000 to his crew. No wonder they got emotional when they heard about this. They thought it was such a meagre amount for the kind-hearted baba they have known for years. Finally Manaayata had to convince them that he was happy and managing with the amount that had been granted to him and his staff resumed their work.
